AUGUST 2025 - News from Malawi, Chilida
From Malawi, Chilida Community
By Rev Godwins Maere
As the 2024-2025 school calendar comes to a close, we're proud to report that our school has made significant strides in providing quality education to our 65 students. As a newly developed independent school, we are facing a lot of challenges.
Our vision is to create a thriving learning environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth. We've made progress in constructing a 26-room hostel, with one side already roofed , this was made possible because of your support and we are grateful. However, this other side of the hostel is still not roofed since the funds we received were only enough to roof one side.
Additionally, our science laboratory and library are functional but require upgrades to enhance the learning experience. The library needs books and science laboratory needs science apparatuses and tools .
We're also facing challenges beyond the classroom. Malawi's harvest season has been severely impacted by dryness, resulting in food shortages and rising maize prices. Many families in our community are struggling to access basic necessities, and we need your prayers and support to navigate this difficult time.
By supporting Chilida Community School, you are investing in the future of our students and our community. Your donation help us:
- Complete the remaining side of our hostel
- Upgrade our science laboratory and library
- Provide support to families in need during this challenging time
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and community. We invite you to continue in this journey of helping in building brighter future for the younger generation of Malawi.
Thank you for standing with us, in many ways you have become strength to the weak, become eyes to the the blind, you have become legs to the lame and your brought education which is enlightening our future
Update for May 2025
Greetings!
I'm pleased to update you on the progress at Chilida High School. We received a generous donation from you which came through Matt Williams, which translated to approximately £500 (1 million Malawi Kwacha). This enabled us to purchase 60 iron sheets and commence roofing the hostel. The hostel comprises 26 rooms, and we've decided to prioritize the first 16 rooms, requiring 120 iron sheets. We'll complete one side initially and then move to the other side, which will also need 60 ironsheets
After the first phase is done , we shall move to the final phase (10 rooms and bathrooms), which will also need 120 iron sheets.
We're grateful for your support and look forward to completing this project with your continued help.
Thank you for your kindness.
Best regards,
Godwins Maere

A letter from Melita in November 2023
Dear Praying Friends
It is nearly the end of hot season here. We await the start of the proper rainy season. There is one overarching, heavy concern here that we would like to share with you for your prayers. It both very simple, and very complex. A few weeks ago, we received this urgent and distressing text from a friend called Francis, who lives in a nearby village. Nearly every year Malawi has a “hungry season”, as people’s food runs out before the next harvest arrives. This usually starts in January / February, a couple of months before the harvest in April. This message, however, arrived in late September. We met Francis, and he was not exaggerating. He was thin and distressed and brought a saddening report from the village. To make matters worse, he is caring for 4 orphaned children whose house was destroyed by the cyclone earlier this year. Several things contributed to Francis’s situation....... Melita Gordon
You may remember that Melita visited our church in the summer of 2022. She is a doctor in Blantyre, Malawi. She sees patients and does research, as a gastroenterologist and vaccine expert, in the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust centre. She and her husband Stephen have lived and worked in Malawi for over 25 years. As well as being very involved in a city centre church in Blantyre, Melita has recently been inducted by the Church of England as a Lay Pioneer, and is linked with our church as part of her ministry. Melita will be preaching for us at various points in the year and hopes to visit us in person again this coming summer.

Childa High School
Matt Williams, a member of our church family, has lived and worked in Malawi. There he met Godwins Maere who has succesfully brought new affordable agricultural techniques to his community to eliminate hunger. Now, he is focused on education. He has nearly completed the building of Childa High School.
Get to know Godwins in this short video.
